Hanna Fastrich approaches lighting as a sculptural and spatial object, questioning where function ends and an object begins to shapes the experience of its surroundings. Drawing on her background in architecture, she explores the relationship between object and environment and the ways in which functional forms can act as spatial agents. In her new work Oxidised Light, Fastrich combines translucent porcelain with blackened stainless steel. She carries out every stage of production herself in her London studio, from shaping, glazing, and firing the porcelain to TIG welding, oxidizing, patinating, and finishing the metal components. Softly filtered through the oxide glaze, light becomes part of the material composition, while stitch-like welded edges and small ceramic dimmer switches bring material, construction, and use into close dialogue.
