Fique fiber, a material collected from the agave plant native to Colombia, was crucial to the production of coffee bags used to export produce from Colombia to the rest of the world. As the demand for fique in this form dies out, so does the industry and farmers who produce it. As part of her years long research, Escobar has worked closely with local farmers and producers to harness this abundant, renewable material for use in her textile art. Resulting in incredible results, the Spine is an example of this series.Â
Exhibited as part of the Summer 2025 exhibition GROUNDED at MAJ VAN DER LINDEN, this piece is available to view until October 2 in the Berlin gallery.
