Crafted from discarded earth and dehydrated oyster shells hyper-locally sourced in Baja California, Mexico. “Trace” is a conceptual exploration of our relationship with the earth and the consequences of modern agricultural practices. Through a series of sculptural tableware pieces, the collection visualizes the impact of soil erosion caused by food consumption. Soil supports our food systems, sustains biodiversity, and acts as a mediator of human existence. However, soil degradation due to unsustainable farming practices threatens food security and environmental health. “Trace” seeks to illustrate the invisible cost of our meals by transforming soil erosion into physical objects. In each sculpture, the artists represent the amount of soil lost due to the average daily food consumption of a single person — approximately 6.9 pounds of eroded soil per meal. By giving physical form to this invisible loss, the work illustrates the individual impact of just one meal on the land.
The sculptures are made using rammed earth sourced from farmland impacted by real estate development in the Valle de Guadalupe, and dehydrated shells collected from the oyster landfill in San Quintín — both located in Baja California, Mexico, a key region for agriculture and aquaculture vital to the country’s economy. The work reimagines the overlooked, repurposing the remnants of a changing landscape. The stainless steel surfaces, shaped like Earth’s contours and polished to a mirror finish, prompt reflection on the environmental impacts of our consumption.
